History

Founded in 1963

Sukup Manufacturing Co. was founded on a spirit of innovation and a desire to solve real-world challenges faced by farmers. In 1962, farmer and inventor Eugene Sukup purchased his first grain bin to dry and store shelled corn. When he discovered that grain was drying unevenly and developing hot spots that led to spoilage, he set out to find a solution.

Using ingenuity and materials he had on hand, Eugene modified a stoker auger from a coal furnace and suspended it inside the grain bin to stir the grain and improve airflow. After initial experimentation and feedback from customers, he refined the design by developing an automatic stirring system featuring a horizontal auger. The innovation proved highly successful and was patented as the Stirway® stirring machine.

Recognizing the potential of the invention, Eugene and his wife, Mary, founded Sukup Manufacturing Co. in Sheffield, Iowa, in 1963. What began as a simple solution to a farming problem grew into a global leader in grain storage, drying, and handling equipment.

More than six decades later, Sukup remains family-owned and operated, continuing the legacy of innovation, problem-solving, and service that began with one farmer’s determination to improve the way grain is stored and handled. >> LEARN MORE
