SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT: ATURA Architecture

Last Updated 2/14/2025Posted in News & Resources

The firm’s name may have changed, but ATURA Architecture’s dedication to Mason City remains strong.

Founded in 1923 in Mason City as Hansen & Waggoner, the firm initially operated out of the Brick & Tile building. It later moved to the space now housing apartments above Simply Nourished, where it remained until 2018. That year, the firm rebranded as ATURA and relocated to a new design office in Clear Lake.

“With a 95-year history in Downtown Mason City, we are committed to seeing the growth and improvement in the downtown continue,” said Austin Pehl, Business Development Manager. “Main Street Mason City does an amazing job of improving and adding value to the downtown both in the events as well as the business promotion and beautification initiatives.”

Specializing in full-service architecture, interior design, and master planning, ATURA’s history has shaped its philosophy—enhancing human experiences through creative, appropriate, and user-focused design.

“Both Tom and Karl (Waggoner) had such a legacy for quality and impactful design in North Iowa,” Pehl said. “As a business developer, I really respected the integrity of Tom and his ability to service and connect with people.”

According to Pehl, the firm’s ability to adapt its services to meet clients’ needs is what sets it apart.

“We are committed members within the community and look to create long-lasting relationships with our clients,” he said. “Our desire is to create quality design that focuses on the client’s goals and not our own.”

That dedication extends beyond their clients, as ATURA’s staff is deeply involved in the communities where they live.

“At the core, our staff is heavily involved in our churches,” Pehl said. “This allows us the opportunity to be involved with many other non-profit organizations such as Caring Pregnancy Center, Youth for Christ, and Habitat for Humanity. We have a long history of serving on the MSMC board and other organizations that bring about growth and support for MC community.”

Looking ahead, 2025 is shaping up to be a strong year for ATURA.

“Our company will have a record year in 2025 within the first four months,” Pehl said. “We have a number of new daycares around the state that we are involved in. We also have a large number of projects for both schools and cities that span from recreation centers to auditoriums.”

Pehl also said they are excited about the current and recent development with Southbridge Mall and Willow Creek area, emphasizing their anticipation for future projects that will foster housing growth and attract new businesses.

“In a town where we have several qualified architecture firms, we strongly encourage local businesses and leaders to support the local design firms,” Pehl said. “It pays to support ATURA and the other local firms when considering design. As a local resource, we have a level of investment and accountability that outside firms cannot match.”
