Celebrating Women Entrepreneurs: Kristy Marquis

Kristy Marquis, owner of Kristy Marquis State Farm, believes her team’s efforts to truly get to know their customers, find out what’s important to them when it comes to their insurance and financial world, and tailor their recommendations to their unique situation, sets her office apart from other insurance agencies.

“Oftentimes, when people make the switch to my office, they comment that nobody has ever taken the time to go through things and explain them as thoroughly as we do at our office,” she said. “I prioritize integrity, accuracy, and empathy in my work. We know people have a choice in who they do business with, so we aim to provide knock-your-socks-off service so our customers always choose us.”

Marquis moved to Mason City 23 years ago so she could pursue her career as a State Farm agent, which began as an underwriter in 1993 in the Lincoln, Nebraska regional office.

“I decided to become an agent in 2001 because I loved the idea of working directly with customers and helping them to manage the risks of everyday life and realizing their dreams,” Marquis said. “I grew up in a restaurant family, so serving customers is deeply ingrained in me.”

Being a woman in the insurance industry sometimes means she talks with folks who feel only a man can advise them on their insurance and financial needs.

She hasn’t let that stop her from succeeding. “I’ve overcome this challenge by attaining numerous designations and certifications that very few of my male counterparts have achieved in their careers, she said.

Marquis and her team at 15 E State Street focus not only serving customers, but the community. They do different community outreach events throughout the year, including sponsoring several Parks & Rec youth sports teams, supporting the local farmer’s market and honoring those who deserve special recognition, like mothers and veterans.

“We try to do things that will have a positive impact on not only our customers, but on everyone else.”

Her advice to other women looking to start their own business is simple: “Go for it!” she said. “You can achieve whatever you set your mind to.”
