Last Updated 3/7/2025Posted in News & Resources

Main Street Mason City (MSMC) hosted its annual meeting on Thursday, March 6th, bringing together community leaders, local businesses, volunteers, and supporters to celebrate the achievements of 2024 and share the exciting vision for 2025. The event was a true reflection of MSMC’s mission to empower community growth, foster vibrant local businesses, enrich cultural experiences, and create a welcoming atmosphere for all.

2024: A Banner Year for Main Street Mason City

The past year was nothing short of remarkable for MSMC. The organization welcomed several new businesses to the Main Street District, including River City Lounge, Kinderhaus Preschool, Powder Street Pizza, Gyro Place Mason City, and Rock Steady Boxing.

Volunteers played a vital role, contributing nearly 1,800 hours to downtown beautification, committee meetings, special events, and projects—a value of over $44,000!

MSMC hosted eight signature events, from the Spring Hop Brunch Crawl and Brew to Brew Bike Ride to the Haunted Historic Building Tour, Home for the Holidays, and Run with Rudolph 5K. The Friday Night Live Summer Series brought 11 weeks of free, live music to the downtown district.

Other milestones included the launch of a new website, the biennial community outreach survey, and successful branding focus groups. The support from investors and sponsors, such as The City of Mason City, First Citizens Bank, Alpha Media, Coloff Media, Clear Lake Bank & Trust, CENT Credit Union, Central Park Dentistry, Tim & Denise Schupick, Atura Architecture, Jason Geving – Edward Jones, Farmers State Bank, Henkel Construction, Tierney Development & Construction, and many others, was pivotal to achieving these accomplishments.

Looking Ahead: Goals & Priorities for 2025

As MSMC turns its focus to 2025, three key transformational strategies will guide the organization:

  • Organization Development: Strengthening the capacity to serve the community and support economic and cultural growth.
  • Recreation/Biking: Enhancing connections between the downtown district and recreational attractions like Prairie Rock Trails and River City Riverwalk.
  • Architectural Tourism: Promoting Mason City’s architectural treasures and its designation as a cultural and entertainment district. A fresh, new organizational brand and a dynamic destination brand are set to launch this year.

Additionally, MSMC will move its office to 13 N. Federal Avenue, sharing space with Visit Mason City and creating a brand-new Downtown Welcome Center.

Recognizing Outstanding Contributions

The annual meeting also honored businesses and individuals who made significant contributions to MSMC’s efforts in 2024:

  • Volunteer of the Year: John Lee—A dedicated community member and servant leader who balances roles as a teacher, football coach, and City Council member while always lending a helping hand at MSMC events.
  • Innovative Business of the Year: Roots Nutrition Counseling & More—Led by Jenn Pope, this business exemplifies visionary leadership with a holistic approach to wellness, from nutrition counseling to creative catering through Boards and Bars.

  • Main Street Impact Award: Three Bells Books—This indie bookstore has quickly become a vibrant community hub, offering a welcoming space for connection and creativity through events, book clubs, and more.

MSMC also recognized three dedicated board members:

  • Melissa Fabian, for six years of dedicated service, whose leadership will continue as chair of the Promotions Committee.
  • Steven Van Steenhuyse, for a decade of invaluable contributions as City Liaison, whose guidance and collaboration continue to make a lasting impact.
  • Diane Arndt, for her exceptional service as Board President over the past two years.
