The Movies Are Back: Southbridge Movie Theater Reopens in Downtown Mason City

There’s something magical about going to the movies — the smell of popcorn, the excitement of the big screen, and the memories made with friends and family. Beginning Saturday, May 16th, that tradition officially returns to Downtown Mason City as the Southbridge Movie Theater reopens its doors to the community.

Originally opened on May 23, 1985, the theater is being brought back to life with a special Grand Opening Celebration featuring free screenings of the 1984 classic Footloose — a fitting throwback to the era when the original cinema first welcomed moviegoers. The celebration begins with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 AM on Saturday, May 16th, followed by showings of Footloose at 12:00 Noon, 3:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 9:00 PM.

Admission is FREE with advance RSVP. Limited tickets may be available at the door for $5, pending availability. Seating is limited.

The reopening of the theater marks another exciting step forward for Downtown Mason City and the continued revitalization of Southbridge Mall as a community gathering space and entertainment destination.

And the movie magic doesn’t stop there.

During North Iowa Band Festival weekend, the Southbridge Movie Theater will also host special screenings of The Music Man on May 23rd, 24th, and 25th. There may be no better place to watch Meredith Willson’s beloved classic than right here in River City during one of Mason City’s most celebrated weekends of the year.
